I want to be the best partner that I can be for my patients as they confront any health issue or concern. I strongly believe that the best way to improve my patients’ health is through shared decision making with them and by using my expertise and evidence-based medicine to guide this process. I value how devoted my colleagues are and how well Kaiser Permanente’s model of care serves patients, utilizes evidence, and improves outcomes for individuals and communities. I believe this organization allows me to be the best physician I can be. I work in clinical infectious diseases, and my emphasis is on infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, HIV medicine, complex wounds, tropical medicine, and vaccines. I truly love the challenges, constant learning, and relationships with my patients and colleagues.
I was born in the United States but grew up in Canada. I entered a career in medicine as it fit well with my goals to be of service to the community, a life-long learner, and a caregiver. I spent six years in sub-Saharan Africa in HIV/Tuberculosis/Malaria research and treatment. I started a large HIV treatment center for commercial sex workers with my colleagues in Nairobi. At present, I am the vice-president of a global health non-governmental organization called Health Alliance International that focuses on strengthening health systems.
